CPM, CPC, CTR and ROAS: A Practical Advertising Metrics Guide
Understand advertising metrics, formulas, worked examples and interpretation.
Advertising dashboards expose many numbers, but each metric answers a different question. Use this guide to understand what each measure says, what it leaves out, and how to build a more useful review of campaign performance.
Start with the campaign question
If your goal is awareness, impressions and reach matter. If your goal is site visits, clicks and click-through rate matter. If your goal is revenue, attribution, conversion values and operating costs matter. No single metric tells the whole story.
Four useful formulas
| Metric | Formula | What it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | (Spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000 | What did 1,000 impressions cost? |
| CTR | (Clicks ÷ impressions) × 100% | What portion of impressions generated clicks? |
| CPC | Spend ÷ clicks | What was the average click cost? |
| ROAS | Attributed revenue ÷ ad spend | How much reported revenue followed each unit of spend? |
Worked example
Imagine a campaign with 50,000 impressions, 600 clicks, 300 units of advertising spend and 900 units of attributed revenue. CPM is 6; CTR is 1.2%; CPC is 0.50; ROAS is 3×. These results are arithmetically consistent but do not establish that the campaign was profitable.
For example, if the product costs 650 to fulfil, the remaining amount before taxes and overhead could be negative even when ROAS is positive. Do not mistake media-only return for full business profit.
Compare like with like
- Confirm the same date window, time zone and attribution settings.
- Separate brand awareness and conversion campaigns before ranking performance.
- Review audience fit, creative, landing-page experience and viewability.
- Consider conversion quality and cost to serve, not only click volume.
- Watch for small sample sizes before changing budgets aggressively.
